    The Word On The Street is a non-profit organization that celebrates Canadian reading and writing, and champions literacy primarily through a free, annual outdoor festival. Every September, in communities from coast-to-coast, we invite everyone to participate in hundreds of author events, presentations and workshops, and to browse a marketplace that boasts the best selection of Canadian books and magazines you'll find anywhere. And it's free!

    Opportunity Roles

    Social Media Crew

    Are you savvy with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Do you love taking photos? Then this is the crew for you! Work with our marketing team to bring The Word On The Street festivities to our online audiences There may be extended periods of standing/walking. **A resume is required for this position **

    Sponsorship Crew

    This crew of volunteers will be working directly with The Word On The Street sponsors. You will be helping out at their activations in various different roles. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Information Crew

    Do you like to chat with people about all things books? Then this is the position for you! This is our second biggest crew, and an extremely import role. You are the face of The Word On The Street to the 200,000+ visitors. You help answer questions and provide excellent customer service. This crew may require heavy lifting. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Logistics Crew

    Are you interested in working in events? Do you like to to work outdoors? Then this is the crew for you! You will be responsible for helping to setup and tear down The Word On The Street. This crew requires heavy lifting. There are pre-festival shifts. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Programming Crew

    Do you want to be part of our largest Crew? Then the Programming Crew is you for! You will be working at one of our 15 stages to ensure that all of our programming runs smoothly! There may be pre-festival shifts. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Exhibitor Relations Crew

    Do you like to help people? Then this is the crew for you!. This Crew is responsible for welcoming all of The Word On The Street's 250+ exhibitors. This crew is there support our amazing exhibitors and to ensure that they have everything that they might need. There are pre-festival shifts. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Volunteer Office Crew

    Do you like meeting new people and admin work? Then the Volunteer Office crew is for you! You will be responsible for greeting the 250+ volunteers, and supporting the volunteer coordinator with various admin tasks. There are pre-festival shifts.

    Floater Crew

    Are you always up for an adventure? Then this is the crew for you! You could be assigned to any of the various crews here, or asked to help out with something completely different! This is a great position if it is your first year volunteer with The Word On The Street, and you are not sure which crew is best for you. This crew may require heavy lifting. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    ESL Mentoree Crew

    Are you looking to better your English or French conversation skills? Then this crew is for you! This position is for volunteers who are looking to improve their English or French. Partner up with another volunteer who will help you get the most out of your volunteer experience! There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Volunteer Captains

    Have you volunteered with The Word On The Street before, and would like to take on more of a leadership role? Then we would love you have you as a Captain. These positions are for returning volunteers only. There is an application process for these positions. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    VIP Lounge Crew

    Are you interested in working with VIPs and have excellent customer service? Then this crew is for you! Join our VIP Lounge crew to greet and meet the needs of our special guests.

    Marketing Research Crew

    Are you passionate about The Word On The Street and want everyone to know about it? Then this is the crew for you! The marketing research team helps ensure that everyone has the info they need to get the most out of the Festival. They will also share info on the festival at key locations across Toronto. *New this year*, the Marketing Research Crew will talk to fellow bookworms/attendees to help us collect information that will make The Word On The Street even better! There are pre-festival shifts. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    Francophone Ave Crew

    Fluent French is a requirement for these roles: Programming Attendant: Ensure programming on our Franco-stage runs smoothly! Bookselling Assistant: Ensure authors have all they need, and manage lines of visitors. Stage Manager: Work with the venue host to keep the program on schedule. Author Assistant: Ensure authors are ready and comfortable to present at the festival. There may be pre-festival shifts. This crew may require heavy lifting. There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

    WOTS Office Volunteer Crew

    Curious about what goes into preparing for the festival? Are you excited about event planning? Then the WOTS Office Volunteer Crew is for you! This crew will work closely with our office staff to organize and prepare our inventory pre/post-festival. There are pre-festival shifts. There are post-festival shifts This crew may require heavy lifting

    Street Team Crew

    Do you like meeting new people and sharing your love for WOTS? Then this is the crew for you! The Street Team Crew helps spread the word about WOTS. You will share information at key places and transit stations across Toronto and share your love of the festival with fellow bookworms and bookworms to be. There are pre-festival shifts. There are extended periods of standing/walking.

    Photography Crew

    Are you a shutterbug? Do you love taking photos? Then the Photography Crew is for you! This crew helps us capture captivating photos and exciting memories of the festival. There may be extended periods of walking/standing/bending. Sample photography is required to apply for this role.
